Day 1 of the second annual Arizona Basketball Challenge lacked suspense with every result a double-digit triumph. The average margin of victory was 17 points in Friday's eight games.
But Saturday could be a day of redemption. Who stood out on the tourney's first day?
The local Mesa schools (Red Mountain two wins, Dobson and Mountain View) combined for a 4-0 mark. Red Mountain knocked off a sizzling Laveen Cesar Chavez, who just three days earlier won the Phoenix Union Tournament. Phoenix North with ailing standout Daniel Bejarano, lost for the second time in as many games to red-hot Dobson. Chavez and North might have been feeling the effects of playing their fifth game in eight days. They get a chance to bounce back tonight, but North must subdue Dobson and Chavez gets to try out Federal Way, Washington in its debut tonight in the tourney.
Two late afternoon, early evening games pit four of the winning teams from Friday. Highland and Pinnacle at 5:30 and Mountain View and Lone Peak, Utah at 7. Lone Peak was the most impressive of the out-of-state schools Friday. Highland was high-octane with sophomores Nick Johnson and Matt Carlino combining for 62 points in topping Harvard-Westlake, who seemed just a step slow in its opener, but showed an ability to light up the scoreboard as well in its 96-84 loss to Highland.
Mountain View, the only unbeaten team on the season, will get perhaps its best test tonight with Lone Peak, who was sharp in thumping Saguaro in its opener.
